Sourcing · High-phenolic olive oil
Where can I buy high-phenolic olive oil from Italy?
That is the growth in online search interest for high-phenolic olive oil in two years (Exploding Topics, Bellasource analysis, September 2026). Demand moved first. Supply is still catching up, and most of it does not come from Italy.
What is high-phenolic olive oil?
Extra virgin olive oil rich in polyphenols, the compounds that give a fresh oil its bitterness and its peppery finish. The number is not a feeling. It comes from a laboratory, lot by lot. Think of it as a vintage: the same grove gives a different number every year. In the European Union the benchmark is a legal one: a health claim is allowed only when the oil contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g (Regulation (EU) 432/2012). High polyphenols come from early harvest and low yields. Volume-driven producers cannot simply switch.
Why is the shelf Greek when the raw material is Italian?
Because Greece told the story first. In US olive oil imports, Greece holds 3.3% of volumes; Italy holds 29.5% (UN Comtrade 2025, Bellasource analysis). Yet the brand that defined the high-phenolic segment in America is Greek.
The raw material says something else. In a study of 108 Italian extra virgin oils from Tuscany and Apulia, about three in four reached the EU polyphenol threshold, and Coratina and Frantoio cultivars showed the highest phenol levels (Molecules, 2019). Small groves and ancient cultivars were long seen as Italy's weakness. In this segment they are the requirement.
Italy's name already carries a premium: $7.53 per kg on average in US imports, against $5.92 for Spain (UN Comtrade 2025, Bellasource analysis). The certified number adds a second layer on top. That is the opportunity for a buyer: an origin customers already pay for, plus a measurable reason to pay more.
What can I say on a US label?
Less than in Europe. The EU polyphenol claim does not apply in the United States. The FDA recognizes a qualified health claim for oils with at least 70% oleic acid, olive oil included, announced on November 19, 2018 (FDA). So in America you sell the certified number, not the European sentence. Many importers discover this after the labels are printed. Check final wording with your regulatory advisor before, not after.
What should I ask an Italian producer?
| Ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Lab analysis of polyphenols, per lot, with method and date | The number changes every harvest; last year's certificate is not this year's oil |
| Cultivar and harvest date | Early harvest and cultivars like Coratina explain the result |
| Extra virgin classification and chemical analysis | High phenols do not replace basic quality |
| Capacity per harvest | Low yields mean limited volumes: book early |
| FDA food facility registration | Required before the oil can enter the US |
A producer who cannot show the analysis is selling a promise. Walk away politely.

Frequently asked questions
Which customs code covers high-phenolic olive oil?
It is extra virgin olive oil, HS 1509.20 (HTS 1509.20). The polyphenol count does not change the code; your customs broker confirms the full national line.
Is high-phenolic oil always bitter?
It is more bitter and peppery than a mild oil. That is the polyphenols speaking. Samples let your team and your customers judge.
Why are volumes limited?
Because the method is. Early harvest and low yields mean less oil per tree. Contracts are best discussed before the harvest, not after.
Can I use the EU health claim in the US?
No. Show the certified polyphenol number and follow FDA labeling rules.
Do you work with buyers outside the US?
Yes: importers, distributors, specialty retail and foodservice worldwide. In the EU the polyphenol claim can go on the label.
