What tools can I use to source food from Italy?

Five kinds of tool: official trade data (UN Comtrade, Eurostat), B2B marketplaces (Alibaba.com and its AI agent Accio), supplier checks (the EU VIES service, FDA facility registration), US compliance (FSVP and a licensed customs broker) and samples. Each one answers a different question. None of them, alone, finds you the right Italian producer. In this guide: what each tool does, what it misses, and in what order to use them.

Which country should I buy from?

Start with trade data, not with suppliers. UN Comtrade shows what every country imports, from where and at what average price, by customs code. Eurostat does the same for the European Union. Both are free and official.

The price per kilo is the most underrated number in sourcing. In US olive oil imports, Italian oil averages $7.53 per kg against $5.92 for Spanish oil (UN Comtrade 2025, Bellasource analysis). That gap is the market telling you what the Italian origin is worth before you open a single catalogue.

Where do I find Italian producers?

On B2B marketplaces, for the ones that are there. Alibaba.com lists Italian producers next to traders and resellers. Accio, Alibaba.com's AI sourcing agent, answers a question in plain language with a short list of suppliers and passed 10 million monthly active users in March 2026 (Alibaba International).

Both see only what is on the platform. Many of Italy's best small producers have no storefront anywhere. So a marketplace gives you reach; it does not give you the whole country. We explain the difference in Is Accio part of Alibaba.com? and Can I find real Italian food suppliers on Alibaba.com?.

How do I check a supplier?

With free, official tools, before any sample.

Tool What it checks What it misses
EU VIES Whether an Italian VAT number is valid and linked to a business name and address Whether that business makes the product
FDA food facility registration Whether the facility may supply food to the US; 2026 is a renewal year, October 1 to December 31 Product quality
Verified Supplier on Alibaba.com On-site verification of the company by third parties such as SGS, Intertek or TÜV Rheinland Every single lot, and whether a trader or a maker holds the account
Trade Assurance Refund if an order paid through Alibaba.com is not shipped, goes missing or arrives defective Orders paid outside the platform

A badge opens the conversation. The documents in the producer's own name close it.

What do I need to import into the US?

Two things no marketplace does for you. First, the FSVP importer, the US owner or consignee of the food at entry, must evaluate each foreign supplier and run verification activities (FDA). Second, a customs broker: brokers are licensed and regulated by US Customs and Border Protection and file entries on the importer's behalf (CBP). The tools help. The responsibility stays with the importer. More in Do I need a broker to buy food from Italy?.

Why do I still need samples?

Because no tool tastes. Trade data tells you the market, a marketplace tells you who is visible, a certificate tells you who is compliant. Only the product tells you whether your customers will buy it again. Bellabox brings Italian samples to your door, so you taste before you talk numbers.

In what order should I use them?

  1. Trade data to choose the origin and read the price.
  2. Marketplaces and AI agents to see who is visible.
  3. Checks on every name: VAT, certificates, FDA registration.
  4. Samples before any negotiation.
  5. Compliance with your customs broker and your FSVP before the first shipment.

When the producer you want is not on any platform, the tools stop and the work starts. That is where we come in: one request, a shortlist of Italian producers within two business days, samples before any commitment. Two examples of how we work a category: non-alcoholic aperitivo and high-phenolic olive oil.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one tool that does everything?

No. Each tool answers one question. The mistake is asking the wrong tool the wrong question.

Are UN Comtrade and Eurostat really free?

Yes. Official statistics usually arrive a few months late: good for direction, not for this week's prices.

Can an AI agent choose my supplier?

It can shortlist and chase quotes. Price, terms and the purchase order still need a human decision.

How do I check an Italian VAT number?

On the European Commission's VIES service. It takes two minutes and filters out more than any badge.

Can Bellasource check a supplier I found myself?

Yes. Send us the name; we check documents, capacity and fit with your market before you commit.
